Process
I draw daily in different ways. The majority of my time is spent on project work for clients and licensing, but always budget a little time for skill-building.
When I approach a client-piece, such as the designs for puzzle companies, I start with sketches and extensive research. Usually I set out to challenge myself in a new way with each piece. I do dozens of thumbnails before arriving at the color sketches you see below.
My skill-building work is never ending. I'll do life studies, anatomy studies, or just watch speed-paints from other illustrators. I also enjoy purusing through art history books and studying the techniques of the great masters. The amount to learn is overwhelming and humbling.
