In early 2009, I completed a mural for the Lyell Avenue Library in Rochester, NY. The mural began as this rough thumbnail sketch. The library director wanted this mural to draw attention to their teen section. It would be located above their graphic novels, so she requested an manga style. The mural also needed to depict teens engaged in outdoor activities and reference the city of Rochester

The first color comp was created in Photoshop using my trusty Wacom tablet. It was requested that the color palette be kept in the blues to match with the blue decor.

Here was the final digital color comp that featured more detailing, such as the animals, and a change of the skateboarder in the background to a rollerblader.

Once the comp was approved, we took it to the wall. Using an artograph projector, we traced the basic outlines to keep the image in proportion. Here I'm being assisted by Melissa Ellermann, who was present for most of the painting days. I also had volunteers from RIT's DPHiE and the MST Art Education program.

Rough color being blocked in. The mural is approximately 12' by 7'.

More color. While working on this project, I tried to keep a few areas very unfinished, so patrons would not get the impression the mural was complete. Scheduling issues prevented me from working on it during the week so it took over a month.

Ugly stage! By this point I was wondering if it would ever be done.

The background begins to recede and the foreground starts to finally pop.

Finally completed!
